Peru - Cusco & Machu Picchu

Peru - Cusco & Machu Picchu

To say that Cusco holds a special place in our hearts is an understatement.  We have absolutely loved our time that we spent in and around the city.  From our adrenaline pumping experience in the Sacred Valley to the stunning lost city of Machu Picchu (which is 100% worth all the hype) we have loved every minute we spent here.

Ecuador - Montañita

Ecuador - Montañita

Montañita is a little hippy town on the coast of Ecuador that never sleeps.  From "drink alley" that caters to cheap alcoholic drink specials all night long, to the late night partiers spilling out of the clubs at 7am the next morning.  It's easy to understand how some people love the city and stay a lot longer than they originally intended while others can't wait to leave.  Find out our thoughts on Montañita...

Ecuador - Puerto Lopez

Ecuador - Puerto Lopez

After one of the longest bus rides we arrived on an overnight bus to Puerto Lopez.  I’m not talking about long duration, although it was 9 hours, but long because the seats were so crammed together! Piet and I were the lucky winners of the two best seats in the house that came with two screaming children packed on top of their parents already crammed laps behind us.

Ecuador - Quito

Ecuador - Quito

So since we left Medellin we have been exceptionally busy moving around.  We took a flight from Medellin to Cali where we spent two nights.  To be honest, Cali was our least favourite city from everywhere that we have been.  We found it sort of dirty and really didn’t have the safest feeling there.  Lucky for us it was just a stop-over on our way to Ecuador.  For the next two days we were either on buses or in transit.  Our journey looked like this: taxi to bus terminal in Cali, bus to Pasto (9hrs)- overnight stay in Pasto.  The next morning we then took a taxi to the bus terminal, mini bus to Ipiales, another mini bus to the border, border crossing, taxi to the bus depot in Tulcan, bus to Quito and taxi to hotel.

Colombia - Budget

Colombia - Budget

So what did we spend in Colombia during our 6 ½ weeks?  Budgeting and keeping track of everything you spend can be extremely tedious but it's nothing we aren't familiar with.  In preparation for this trip we spent months and months heavily budgeting and analyzing our expenses so we were already in the routine when we started traveling.

So where did our money go?

Colombia - San Jeronimo

Colombia - San Jeronimo

We arrived in Medellin and took a taxi followed by a bus to get to the small town of San Jeronimo. We had booked 4 nights at an amazing hostel called Hostel La Finca which is located way up in the Colombian country side surrounded by lush green rolling hills and all kinds of Finca's.  A Finca is another term that Colombians use for a farm or acreage.
